ブログ名(blogname)、説明(blogdescription)が日本語２バイトコードを受け付けてくれない現象は、php.iniの問題だった。
mbstring.encoding_translation = Off
で、あっけなく解決。
というわけで、MTに比べれば、ずいぶん快適にWordPressで稼動中です。
（やっぱり課題はあるんだけど）
